Here’s my personal perspective on the year gone by and the year ahead.
From Brexit to the election of Donald Trump, and from losing David Bowie to Carrie Fisher (and more many more in between) 2016 can certainly be classed as a significant year for all concerned! Indeed its led to many in the press to dub it ‘the worst ever’. In the ‘Cyberuniverse’ security incidents were also dubed ‘the worst ever’, as the ‘Internet of Things’ was used to attack Dyn, and Yahoo reported a breach which affected 1.5billion accounts, cybercrime rates increased dramatically as 2016 quickly became known as the ‘Year of Ransomware’.

A happier view on 2016
Whilst it’s easy to get caught up in the ‘gloom’ of a year, we at Agenci prefer to reflect on the year with a sense of hope and optimism for the years to come. Yes, we’ve lost some incredible talent this year, but that’s a sign of two things
- we are getting older and
- social mediais increasingly connecting us so we’re now more aware of such news, instantly, and with greater velocity than ever before.
It’s not that ‘more bad things are happening’, it’s simply that we have multiple channels telling us so.
2016’s word of the year is ‘Post-Truth’ relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief. Essentially meaning that people don’t care so much about FACT, but more about what they FEEL.
In case you missed it, 2016 was also the year that the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) was approved in Europe, meaning that in two years from now our landscape for Data Protection will change forever. For those still thinking “But Brexit means we don’t need to worry”, I’m sorry to inform you that you’re wrong. Brexit has no impact on the new legislation which will come into force on May 25th 2018, long before Brexit happens. So don’t be fooled – GDPR is coming.
What about Agenci?
Well Agenci has gone from strength-to-strength in 2016. Like any good business, we are always looking to improve our services, and with that we reviewed our mission and vision and assessed our operations (removing things that simply weren’t working and investing in things that did).
We’ve been working with great clients who believe as we do, that having good security in place is a business enabler and is a business benefit and every client we take with us in to 2017 are precisely the kind we want to work with.
We are increasingly encouraged by the take up of the ‘Cyber Recovery’ Insurance product we support through Lorega, our partners. And it was great to see our work recognized as Agenci and Lorega won the ‘Insurance Product of the year’ at the Cyber Security Awards in June.
Added to this Agenci have gone on to build its ‘Agenci Consultant Programme’ with new consultants coming on board to support our increasing client base.
For me personally it’s been a fantastic year of speaking at over 30 amazing events across the UK, Europe and beyond. From Muscat to Manchester, and Dubai to Doncaster I’ve enjoyed each one I’ve spoken at, learnt something new every time and had the most amazing feedback.
So what of 2017?
In the Chinese horoscope, 2017 is the year of the ‘Rooster’. Apparently ‘Rooster’ people are very observant, which is a good thing. Because apart from it being the year of the Rooster, I believe it’s going to be the year of GDPR. 2018 will be too late to start the process for preparing for this monumental change in UK regulations, so if you’re being observant you’d better start in January 2017.
For Agenci it will be another year of growth, as we look forward to working with more exceptional people and pro-active clients who are committed to developing services which help protect the people they serve. And this is important for us; I (and everyone in Agenci) are passionate about working with clients who want to do the right thing, which is of course provide services or products that do not put their customers at risk. We’re not really interested in ‘ticking a box’ so if that’s what you’re after then I know a few companies I can put you in touch with, because Agenci will not be the right company for you.
Agenci are looking forward to helping current and future clients understand more about what good security looks like through the implementation of ISO27001 and helping them prepare for GDPR. Through a series of webinars, seminars and conferences, we’re here to help improve your security by working with you to develop your security capabilities so that you don’t become a ‘Security statistic’ in 2017.
We look forward to serving and protecting you in 2017, so please do stay in touch. GDRP is coming and Cybercrime is on the increase, in a ‘post truth’ era, this is a fact you can rely on.
To each and everyone reading this, I’d like to wish you, your families and your businesses a happy, healthy and prosperous 2017.
We would love to help you, ask for Gary:
